Pericytes are found on almost all capillaries, as well as on small arterioles and venules. They are small cells located on the outside of the vessel, between the endothelial cell layer and the parenchyma.

2017-11-09 Pericytes, spatially isolated contractile cells on capillaries, have been reported to control cerebral blood flow physiologically, and to limit blood flow after ischaemia by constricting 2019-12-03 Pericytes on pre-capillaries are spaced approximately 2-25 mm apart, compared to up to 100 mm on true capillaries [8]. Pericyte contraction and dilation can significantly affect capillary diameter 2020-07-29 2015-07-06 1996-01-01 2021-02-19 Capillaries were isolated from bovine brain cortex ac cording to Meresse et al. (1989). Primary cultures consisting of mixtures of pericytes and endothelial cells were pre pared. Brain capillary endothelial cells (BCEC) were cloned as previously described (Meresse et aI., 1989) and grown in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) Hypothetically, capillaries may assist arteries and veins in the regulation of blood flow. Our attention has become focused on the pericytes, particularly abundant in the optic nerve and retina, which are a contractile component of capillaries and may therefore be … Pericytes were enclosed within the basement membrane of capillaries, but separated from endothelial cells by a membrane sheet (Fig. 1C).

We used two-photon microscopy to study in real time pericytes and the dynamic changes of capillary diameter and blood flow in the cortex of anesthetized mice, as well as in brain slices. The thromboxane A2 analog, 9,11-dideoxy-9α,11α-methanoepoxy Prostaglandin F2α (U46619), induced constrictions in the vicinity of pericytes in a fraction of capillaries, whereas others dilated. Ultrastructurally, Aβ is deposited around the basement membrane, thus, in direct, intimate contact to smooth muscle cells and pericytes of small arterioles and capillaries . In culture, Aβ is toxic to pericytes; this effect is partly dependent of apolipoprotein E (APOE) 4 genotype, the strongest genetic risk factor for the development of late‐onset AD ( 9 , 57 , 62 , 64 ). 2021-02-26 Pericytes play an important role in BBB function . Pericytes (previously known as Rouget cells) are multi-functional mural cells of the microcirculation that wrap around the endothelial cells that line the capillaries and venules throughout the body. Pericytes are embedded in basement membrane , where they communicate with endothelial cells of the body's smallest blood vessels by means of both direct physical contact and paracrine signaling . [3]

Pericytes of pericytes located in the walls of capillaries, at the place where the metabolic demand occurs and could be most rapidly sensed (3). The contractility of cultured pericytes is well established and, of all organs, capillaries in the central nervous system (CNS) are endowed with the highest number of pericytes (4). Pericytes of Pericytes are contractile cells that surround capillaries in the brain at high density. The traditional view that CBF is regulated solely by precapillary arterioles has recently been challenged by studies in retina and cerebellar slices ( 6 ), as well as in ischemic brain tissue ( 12 ).
